The Rodinia genetic fertility test checks selected genes and sex chromosome changes linked to female or male fertility difficulties. Six options are available, including individual and couple panels and a separate haemophilia and thrombosis add-on where it is relevant.
Rodinia can add a genetic perspective when you are seeking possible reasons for a fertility concern or preparing for treatment. Through My DNA Lab, you can access this information privately and use the report to support an informed conversation with your GP, fertility specialist or clinical genetics professional.
Your kit includes a Buccal Cheek Swab for you and, where relevant, your partner, together with clear instructions. Each sample can be collected from the comfort of home. Once every required sample is ready, contact us and we will arrange collection from your home.
Some fertility difficulties are linked to changes in certain genes or sex chromosomes. Rodinia therefore offers a 55-gene female panel and a 40-gene male panel, together with checks for selected whole, partial or mixed sex chromosome changes. The couple option brings both laboratory panels together in one order.
The female panel includes genes linked to ovarian function, hormone signalling and response to ovarian stimulation. By comparison, the male panel includes genes linked to sperm production and hormone signalling, together with selected X- and Y-chromosome changes.
You can review the full gene and condition scope in the Rodinia panel list under ‘Test provider and further information’ further down this page. ‘Female panel’ and ‘male panel’ are the laboratory’s panel names and describe the biological question being tested.
Rodinia may suit you if you are experiencing a delay in conceiving, preparing for fertility treatment or exploring a possible inherited fertility condition. It may also be relevant for you and your partner, for egg or sperm donation, or where your personal or family history suggests a genetic contribution.
For example, the test may be considered where there are irregular or absent periods, reduced sperm count or movement, or a suspected difference in sex development. However, these concerns can have many causes, and Rodinia does not investigate all of them.
Hormones, reproductive anatomy, age, medicines, lifestyle and other factors can also affect fertility. Rodinia is therefore most useful as one part of a wider fertility assessment rather than as a standalone answer.
Your report may identify a gene or chromosome change that could help explain an inherited part of the fertility concern. It may also find no relevant change or identify a change that needs further investigation.
A relevant finding can support discussions about further tests, reproductive options or fertility treatment. However, it cannot identify every cause of infertility, predict whether conception or treatment will succeed, or choose the best treatment on its own.
We always recommend that you discuss your results with your healthcare professional. Your GP, fertility specialist or clinical genetics professional can compare the report with hormone tests, scans, semen analysis, family history and other information, and then advise whether another investigation may be helpful.
A genetic fertility test answers one part of a wider question: whether the selected panel identifies a relevant change in the genes or chromosomes it covers. It does not replace tests used to assess ovulation, ovarian reserve, reproductive anatomy, semen quality or other non-genetic factors.
Choose the individual laboratory panel that matches the biological question you want to explore, or select a couple option if you and your partner want both panels at the same time. The haemophilia and thrombosis add-on addresses a separate question, so it should not be treated as an automatic upgrade.
A finding may also matter to biological relatives. Keep the complete Rodinia report and share it with the professional reviewing your result, as the full laboratory wording provides more useful context than a screenshot or short summary.
