Paternity Testing

Questions about biological paternity can create uncertainty at a time when you may need clear information for personal or family decisions.

Private paternity testing gives you a confidential laboratory route to establish whether a tested man is supported or excluded as the biological father.
The most suitable test depends on when you want the answer. Testing during pregnancy uses placental DNA found in maternal blood, while testing after birth uses samples collected directly from the child and alleged father.
Our current option is designed for a singleton pregnancy from 10 weeks. Follow the prenatal route below to understand how the test works, which samples are required and whether it matches your present circumstances.

Prenatal Paternity Testing

Choose this route if you want to assess biological paternity during pregnancy from as early as 10 weeks.

PaternitySafe compares placental DNA in the pregnant woman’s blood with DNA from one alleged father’s Buccal Cheek Swab. You receive a report stating whether the tested man is supported or excluded as the biological father.

What paternity testing can tell you

Put simply, a paternity test compares DNA from the people included to assess whether the tested man is supported or excluded as the biological father. The way those samples are collected then depends on whether testing takes place during pregnancy or after birth.
Because our current option is designed for pregnancy, the laboratory uses placental DNA circulating in maternal blood. It then compares selected markers with the alleged father’s DNA, so no sample is taken directly from the pregnancy.

Key information about our current prenatal route

Available from 10 weeks of a singleton pregnancy
Requires maternal blood + alleged father’s buccal cheek swab
Does not require a sample directly from the pregnancy
Includes a specialist laboratory report and free genetic counselling
For the pregnant woman, a qualified healthcare professional must collect the blood sample. You can arrange this locally or use our mobile phlebotomy service within mainland UK. Meanwhile, the alleged father can collect his Buccal Cheek Swab at home.

Use the result for the right purpose

Because paternity testing assesses a biological relationship, it does not screen the pregnancy for chromosome or genetic conditions. It therefore answers a different question from NIPT and does not replace maternity screening or routine pregnancy care.
We always recommend that results are discussed with your Healthcare Professional.
