Prenatal Paternity Testing

If you are uncertain about biological paternity during pregnancy, waiting until after birth may not feel right for your circumstances.

Private prenatal paternity testing offers a confidential way to seek clarity from 10 weeks, giving you information that may help with important personal and family decisions while the pregnancy continues.
PaternitySafe compares placental DNA found in a blood sample from the pregnant woman with DNA from one alleged father’s Buccal Cheek Swab. The report then states whether the tested man is supported or excluded as the biological father.
Because no sample is taken directly from the pregnancy, the test provides a non-invasive route to assessing paternity before birth. Review PaternitySafe below to understand the eligibility requirements, sample process and result before deciding whether it meets your needs.

Key information about prenatal paternity testing

Available from 10 weeks of a singleton pregnancy
No sample is taken directly from the pregnancy
Maternal blood and an alleged father’s Buccal Cheek Swab are required
Free pre-test and post-test genetic counselling is available
A qualified healthcare professional must collect the blood sample from the pregnant woman. You can arrange this locally or use our mobile phlebotomy service within mainland UK. The alleged father, however, can collect his Buccal Cheek Swab at home.

Important: All parties involved need to consent to testing prior to samples being drawn. Where one party does not provide consent, we cannot perform the test without every person(s) approval.

When to contact us before ordering

Please contact us before purchasing if your pregnancy involves:
Twins or triplets
A vanishing twin
Donor eggs or donor sperm
IVF treatment
A surrogate pregnancy
#
We also need to hear from you if more than one alleged father needs to be considered or if the possible fathers are close biological relatives.

These circumstances can change eligibility or the samples the laboratory requires. Once we understand your situation, we can explain whether the current test is suitable and what you will need to provide.

How PaternitySafe works

During pregnancy, small fragments of placental DNA naturally circulate in the pregnant woman’s blood. By analysing this DNA and comparing selected markers with the alleged father’s Buccal Cheek Swab, the laboratory can assess biological paternity without taking a sample directly from the pregnancy.

Your report states whether the tested man is supported or excluded as the biological father. When the result supports paternity, the reported probability is greater than 99.9%; this percentage relates specifically to a result supporting paternity.

Free genetic counselling is available before and after testing. A pre-test session can help you understand the sample process, while a post-test session can help you understand the report. Contact us and we will arrange an introduction to the provider’s representative.

We always recommend that results are discussed with your Healthcare Professional.
