PaternitySafe is a non-invasive prenatal paternity test available from 10 weeks of pregnancy. The laboratory compares cell-free DNA in a maternal blood sample with DNA from the alleged father’s Buccal Cheek Swab and reports whether he is supported or excluded as the biological father.
This gives you private access to a laboratory relationship report before birth without taking a sample directly from the pregnancy. It can provide earlier clarity when waiting until after birth would not suit your circumstances.
A qualified healthcare professional must collect the maternal blood sample, either locally or through My DNA Lab’s mobile phlebotomy service within mainland UK. The alleged father can collect his Buccal Cheek Swab at home. Once both samples are ready, contact us and we will arrange their return to the laboratory together.
During pregnancy, small pieces of DNA from the placenta circulate in the pregnant woman’s blood. This is called cell-free DNA. PaternitySafe analyses this DNA and compares selected markers with the alleged father’s Buccal Cheek Swab.
Using this comparison, the report states whether the tested man is supported or excluded as the biological father of the pregnancy. Because no sample is taken directly from the pregnancy, the test avoids the procedure-related risk associated with collecting a prenatal sample through CVS or amniocentesis.
You can read more about the method and exact sample requirements in the PaternitySafe brochure under ‘Test provider and further information’ further down this page.
PaternitySafe may suit you if you want to assess biological paternity during a singleton pregnancy rather than wait until after birth. Testing is available from 10 weeks, provided the pregnant woman and one alleged father can supply the required samples.
The standard test is designed around this sample combination. If you know that you are expecting twins or triplets, the pregnancy has involved a vanishing twin, or donor eggs or sperm, IVF or a surrogate are involved, contact My DNA Lab before purchasing. We can check the current laboratory requirements and explain whether PaternitySafe is available for your circumstances.
Please also contact us if more than one alleged father needs to be considered or if the possible fathers are close biological relatives. These circumstances can affect how the DNA comparison is interpreted and may require a different testing approach.
Your report states whether the alleged father is supported or excluded as the biological father of the pregnancy. A result supporting paternity includes a probability greater than 99.9%, while an excluded result states that he is not supported as the biological father.
This percentage applies specifically to a result supporting paternity, rather than serving as a general accuracy figure for every possible outcome.
My DNA Lab supplies the complete laboratory relationship report, and you decide how to use it in your personal circumstances. If the result forms part of a civil or legal matter, the organisation receiving it may set its own evidence requirements. My DNA Lab does not provide legal advice or confirm that the report will meet those requirements.
If you would like additional support, free genetic counselling is available both before and after PaternitySafe. A pre-test session can explain the sampling process, while a post-test session can help you understand the report. Contact My DNA Lab and we will put you in touch with a representative from the testing provider. Genetic counselling does not include legal advice.
Before collection, both named participants should understand the purpose of the test, which samples will be compared and how the result will be delivered. Each person should use only the kit components labelled for them.
Because the laboratory compares both samples in one analysis, they must be returned together. Wait until the maternal blood sample and Buccal Cheek Swab are ready before contacting us to arrange collection. Check that each name, date of birth and sample label matches the order details, as this helps prevent avoidable delays.
PaternitySafe compares DNA from the pregnancy with DNA from one alleged father. If another possible father needs to be considered, contact My DNA Lab before purchasing so we can explain whether a different testing approach is needed. Only return the samples requested for your order.
If the order is sensitive, choose an email address and phone number that are private and safe for you to access. We use these details for order updates and result delivery. Only send identity documents when the kit or laboratory instructions specifically request them.
